A bit earlier that year, in January 1995, combination 7;17;23;32;38;42 produced the lowest ever jackpot payout of £122,510, and that's because a total 133 tickets had to share the first prize! Why so many tickets won on that night remains a mistery!

We keep guessing right 2 numbers in each syndicate, and last night syndicate member radicoli in syndicate Argonavis, apart from getting 2 numbers right, was 1 number away on 2 last numbers, meaning this combination could potentially have trapped 4 winnings numbers. Sum it up!

most frequent lottery sumsToday, we are going to look at the distribution of sums and how you can use this method to increase your chances of winning the lottery.

Sum is basically the result you get when you add up all six numbers of a lotto combination. So in 6/49 lottery, the lowest sum of 21 is made from 1;2;3;4;5;6 lottery combination, and the highest possible sum of 279 is attained from 44;45;46;47;48;49. The most frequent sum is 150 whereby 165,772 lotto combinations will add up to it! If you were to draw all sums and their frequencies on one chart, you would get a normal distribution bell curve, similar to one shown in red here. The blue lines within the bell curve are the actual distribution of sums of all UK lotto combinations drawn to date (click on the picture to zoom in).

No two snowflakes are the same, nor are any two UK National Lottery combinations drawn so far

no frequent lotto combinationsSince the inception of the UK National lottery, all drawn combinations have been unique so far. In fact, if you look at the lotteries around the world, you'd find that there is only one lottery (to our knowledge anyway) - the Bulgarian lottery - that had the same combination drawn twice, and amazingly it happened in two consecutive draws! The numbers 4;15;23;24;35;42 were selected, albeit in a different order, live on television on the 6th and 9th of September 2009. A Bulgarian lottery spokesman said: “This has happened for the first time in the 52-year history of the lottery. We are absolutely stunned to see such a freak coincidence”.

Is it mathematically probable?

As any mathematician will tell you any combination has the same chance of being drawn, even the already drawn ones. But if a repeated lottery combination is such a “freak” and rare coincidence, should we really play it? And even if we decide against playing it, wouldn't be a hideous process to go through all 1000+ combinations drawn in the past so that to ensure we pick a never-drawn-before combination?

What's common between 20;21;23;24;27;28 and 2;9;10;11;13;16 and 1;4;7;44;47;48 lottery combinations?

standard deviation formulaYes, they were all drawn sometime in the past. But this is not the common factor that we're after.

Ok, so the clue is in the picture. From Lottorino point of view, these combinations stand out from other drawn lotto combinations in that they all have the biggest out-of-sync standard deviations. If you look closely, you will see that the first two combinations have numbers too close to each other, or put differently the deviation or spread of its numbers from average is very small. 1;4;7;44;47;48 combination has a big gap in the middle boosting its standard deviation high. These are the only combinations in the entire UK National Lottery history that scored a 3‰ Lottorino exclusively on the basis of their abnormal standard deviations. There were other combinations in the past that got downgraded because of their not-so-standard deviations, but the above 3 are the most extreme cases so far.
