Euromillions: millionaire each week - guaranteed!

17 November 2009

lottery millionaireIf you play EuroMillions lottery you now get an extra chance of becoming a millionaire. A new addition called The Millionaire Raffle is now in place since the 13th November 2009. The Millionaire raffle is basically a randomly generated number (like Dream number) printed on your Euromillions ticket , that is 9 digits long and made up of 3 letters and 6 numbers, e.g. ABC123456. It is only applicable to the UK so if you purchase your Euromillions ticket abroad, your ticket will not be entered into the Millionaire Raffle draw.

You cannot choose your Millionaire Raffle, it is randomly selected and it is unique - there can only be one winner! Unlike other lottery games (Lotto draw, Euromillions draw etc), the Millionaire Raffle guarantees a winner every week! The way it works is that a winner is selected from the pool of all those allocated raffle numbers, unlike lottery draws where a combination is generated randomly and if noone played it, jackpot rolls over. The prize for each Millionaire raffle draw is £1 million (hence the name)!

Now onto the odds. The Euromillions odds have not changed, they still are 1 in 76,275,360. Odds of winning the Millionaire raffle depends on the number of Euromillions tickets purchased in the UK. This obviously varies week to week. If on average, UK weekly sales of Euromillions tickets are £6.2m, the odds of Millionaire raffle are then 1 in 6.2 million (so better than the Lotto odds which are 1 in 13,983,816). But when there are rollovers, and huge media publicity takes place, Euromillions tickets sales go up. At such draws, the odds of the Millionaire raffle will become much worse.

So you now get an extra chance of becoming a millionaire but there's no such thing as free lunch right? Right! The Euromillions ticket now costs £2 (used to be £1.50). So you're effectively paying 50p to play the Millionaire Raffle. Unfortunately it isn't optional (unlike Dream number), but it's not bad value for money given the prize and typical odds.

The draw for the Millionaire Raffle will take place during the main Euromillions lottery draw which is broadcast on BBC1 at 11.35pm GMT on Friday evenings.

Now remember - when checking your Euromillions ticket to check the Millionaire Raffle number, do not let your prize go unclaimed!
