The odds of winning the lottery jackpot

Lottery odds differ and depend on (1) how many numbers you have to guess to win the first prize and (2) the range these numbers are selected from. For instance, the lottery odds of the Irish and the UK Lotto games vary because in the Irish Lotto 6 numbers have to be selected from the pool of 1 to 45, whilst in the UK Lotto game the range is 1 to 49. Less numbers you have to guess, the higher the odds of winning. The smaller the range you have to pick your numbers from, the higher the odds of winning.

Shown below are the odds of winning the main prize

Description
The odds of guessing all 5 numbers in Lotto HotPicks Pick 5 correctly are 1 in 317,814
The odds of guessing all 7 numbers in the Daily Play correctly are 1 in 888,030
The odds of guessing all 5 numbers and Thunderball correctly are 1 in 3,895,584
The odds of guessing all 6 numbers in the Irish Lotto correctly are 1 in 8,145,060
The odds of guessing all 7 numbers in Dream Number correctly are 1 in 10,000,000
The odds of guessing all 6 numbers correctly in the UK Lotto draw are 1 in 13,983,816
The odds of guessing all 5 numbers and 2 lucky stars in Euromillions are 1 in 76,275,360
The odds of guessing all 5 numbers and a Mega ball correctly in Mega Millions (USA) are 1 in 175,711,536

What this means is that in the UK Lotto draw, for instance, there are 13,983,816 unique combinations that can be made from numbers 1 to 49. Only one combination will prove to be the “lucky one” in each particular draw! So in other words, you have 1 chance of winning the jackpot in Lotto and 13,983,815 chances of NOT winning it.

In percentage terms, the chances that you scoop the UK Lotto jackpot are 0.0000072% (not even 1%!!!). This is roughly the same odds as obtaining 24 heads in succession when flipping a coin! Try it for yourself, take a coin and flip it 24 times and see if you can land it heads each and every time. It’s possible but highly improbable as the odds are simply stacked against you!

Euromillions odds are even worse. In fact, they are 5 times worse than in the Lotto game, hence the reason why rollovers tend to happen more frequently in Euromillions game: it is far more difficult to guess the winning combination. Put differently, you are 5 times more likely to win the first prize in the Lotto game than Euromillions, and to guarantee the jackpot in the Lotto game you must spend £13,983,816!

Alternatively, if you spend only £1 a week on the Lotto, statistically you may just win the jackpot in 270,000 years time whilst if you buy one ticket a week for Euromillions statistically, you may have to wait for the jackpot for almost 1,500,000 years!

The chances of winning a jackpot are almost non-existent - they say you are more likely to be struck by lightening than to win the first prize in the lottery!

Do not despair though. There are ways you can reduce the odds you are up against. Hitting the jackpot in the UK National Lottery is possible - with the help of an intelligent system and a bit of patience.
