Frequently Asked Questions
We hope that the section below will help answer some of the questions you may have. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us (chat with us online or email us for the fastest response).
Q: What is a syndicate?
A: A syndicate is “a group of individuals or organisations combined to promote a common interest”. In a lottery context, a syndicate is a group of individuals who pool their money together, choose combination(s) to be played and enter into a UK National Lottery draw.
As an example, let’s say 100 people join a syndicate for the next draw by playing one combination each. Therefore by only paying £1, each player is now part of 100 lottery tickets, saving £99! So, greater odds at a small cost! Should any of the tickets within the syndicate win, the winnings will be split equally amongst the players.
Q: So one of the disadvantages of joining a syndicate is that I will have to split my winnings?
A: It’s a big misconception to think that by joining a syndicate all you do is reducing your potential winnings as they will have to be shared with other members of your syndicate.
First of all, there could be multiple winning lines within your syndicate and your share of winnings can still be substantial.
Secondly, over a short term, you probably win more than what you win by playing on your own because in a syndicate you should win more often due to improved odds (refer to the Odds of Winning, Golden Rules and Lottorino Explained sections to read about the odds and how you can improve them with Catchalotto). What would you rather: win smaller sums of money (as well as stand better chances of winning big) or not win at all?
Remember, you are not the only one committing to share winnings, all other syndicate members have committed to do just that too. By joining a syndicate, each member enters into a legally binding syndicate agreement which can be viewed on a syndicate's page (go to Syndicates page and click on a syndicate's name, you can view the syndicate's agreement at the bottom of the page - you need to be logged in to be able to view it!)
Q: Do syndicates work?
A: Yes! Statistics from the various lottery operators all over the world show that syndicates win more often than single tickets. According to Camelot statistics, 1 in 4 of all jackpots are claimed by lottery syndicates!
Q: Why do odds improve when you join a syndicate?
A: The main rationale behind forming a syndicate is because the odds (also known as probability, chances) of winning the jackpot improve. In a syndicate, we can play much more combinations than we could play individually, therefore increasing our chances of winning. Imagine that instead of playing one combination we could play thousands or even millions of combinations for one draw… Wouldn’t our odds improve? Of course they would! The more numbers and combinations we play, the better the odds become. Safety is in numbers! If we cover 13,983,816 combinations we are guaranteed to win the jackpot! Please refer to the Odds of Winning and Golden Rules sections to find out more about the lottery odds and ways to improve them!
Q: What are the benefits of joining Catchalotto syndicates and how do I join?
A: Good question! See Why Catchalotto section to get an answer to the first part of your question.
The How To Play section explains how to join any of Catchalotto’s syndicates. In summary, to join a syndicate, you must be registered with us and have funds available in your account to submit at least one combination.
Q: How often can I join Catchalotto syndicates?
A: As often as you like. Catchalotto syndicates conform to a “play as you go” approach. Each week you must submit your combination(s) into the syndicate(s) for you to be included in that syndicate(s) for that draw. You will only be eligible to your share of winnings if your username together with the combination(s) you submitted, appear within the winning syndicate's agreement (each syndicate has it own syndicate agreement).
Q: Can I join the same syndicate more than once?
A: Yes, you can make as many entries into any of our syndicate(s) as you like. If, for example, a syndicate allows 10 entries and you make 5 entries into such syndicate, you will receive 50% of the syndicate’s winnings.
Q: After I submit a combination to a syndicate, can I cancel and switch my combination to a different syndicate?
A: Once your combination is submitted and payment is deducted from your account, no refunds will be made nor you will be allowed to change the combinations you selected nor move onto a different syndicate. This is to ensure that no member who joined a Catchalotto syndicate suddenly found that most other syndicate members have withdrawn. We have to guarantee to you and other members that the syndicate size will not drop but can only increase or at least stay the same.
Q: What happens if a syndicate is not filled to a specified level?
A: None of Catchalotto syndicates have a minimum level that needs to be reached for a syndicate to become active hence a syndicate is considered to be active even if only one member has joined.
Q: Which syndicate can I join?
A: You can join any syndicate showing a status of “Join”. In general, Catchalotto syndicates can be split into 4 categories: Unlimited , Limited, Intuitive and JustMe syndicates. Please follow the link to read further about Catchalotto Syndicates Info.
Q: I have heard that there may be some short term trends in the lottery and that you can actually increase your chances of winning by betting on such trends? Is this true?
A: The question you have to ask yourself is this: do you believe that the Universe is random or that it consists of complex patterns and probability rules that none of us can yet deter? If you believe in the latter, then it’s most likely that you would believe that the lottery can have patterns that can guide you into choosing the winning combination.
At Catchalotto, we believe that such patterns do exist, albeit not always. We perform in-house analysis of past lottery draws to determine any short term trends and identify the numbers that are “probable” to come up in the next few draws. We then wheel such numbers and depending on how many combinations we generate, we create limited-type Intuitive Syndicate(s) that are pre-loaded with our chosen combinations. When entering into such syndicate(s), you will not be able to select a combination but rather you will be assigned a combination from our list.
If you believe that the lottery is the game not just of chance but also of skill, an Intuitive Syndicate may be of interest to you.
Q: What is Lottorino Scoring Engine?
A: Lottorino Scoring Engine is a proprietary software of Catchalotto. The idea to create the system was born when we started analysing historical UK National Lottery draw data and discovered that most combinations appear to follow the same rules and overall adhere to the concept of randomness. For example there never was a combination consisting of 6 consecutive numbers, not just in the UK National Lottery but in any of the lotteries worldwide! We say that such combination is possible to be drawn in the future, but not very probable.
As a result of our extensive analysis, we developed a complex system that checks a combination against the rules set and subsequently ranks such combination into “very likely to be drawn”, “not so likely”, “very unlikely” etc. The aim is to concentrate on playing combinations that get high Lottorino scores, i.e. considered as “very likely”, and in doing so, we should be able to increase our odds of winning.
Please read Lottorino Explained section for more details.
Q: When is the latest I can join a Catchalotto syndicate?
Please refer to Syndicates Info to find out the answer to this question.
Q: Why are all Catchalotto syndicates formed for the UK National Lottery main Lotto draw and none for the Euromillions game?
The reason here is simple. The odds of winning the first prize in the Lotto game are incredibly minuscule, however they are far better than those of the Euromillions game (please refer to the Odds of Winning section to compare the two). As the proverb goes “Half a loaf is better than no bread”.
We may introduce the Euromillions game at some stage, however at the moment all our energy is directed towards perfecting this site, including but not limited to fine-tuning the Lottorino Scoring Engine.
Q: How much do you charge?
A: We do not have any weekly/monthly/yearly membership charges. There are no standing orders to arrange nor any restrictions as to the minimum number of combinations you have to play each month. We leave the decision how often and which syndicates you would like to join to you!
We charge you only 33 pence more than what you normally would spend when buying your lottery ticket (so a total of £1.33 per combination)!
Q: How do I get my winnings?
A: Winning are shared amongst all members of the WINNING syndicate. Hence, if you played in a syndicate that did not win, you get nothing even if some other syndicate scooped the jackpot. Percentage of winnings will be proportionate to the total number of entries you own within the winning syndicate (i.e. you will receive two thirds of the winnings if you had two entries in the winning syndicate with the total size of 3).
Once your winnings are transferred to “My Balance” section within your Catchalotto account, they can be used by you as required at any time afterwards.
When you request your winnings to be sent to you, these will be sent to you by cheque to the address registered with us.
Q: What is the difference between “My Balance” and “My Uncleared Funds” fields in my Catchalotto account?
A: “My Uncleared Funds” shows your share of winnings which are in the process of being claimed by Catchalotto from the Official Draw Operator. Once received, the amout will flow to “My Balance” field within your Catchalotto account and can be used by you at any time afterwards.
It can be the case that the winning syndicate has numerous prizes spread against various prize tiers (for instance, it won jackpot as well as few 4 number prizes). We aim to distribute the prizes as soon as we physically receive them ourselves. Therefore, prizes that can be instantaneously claimed (via shop retailers etc) will flow through to “My Balance” field of any winner without any major delay. However, prizes that take time to clear will be shown in “My Uncleared Funds” of its winner until we actually claim and receive such prizes from the Official Draw Operator.
Q: Are your transactions secure?
A: We make every effort to safeguard and protect your information. We have security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of your personal information. We use the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol as provided by GeoTrust Inc. which provides secure communications on the Internet for logging in, accessing your account details, updating your profile and much more. When you top up your account, our online payment provider uses SSL to encrypt information, including debit/credit card details, your name, address and other details.
Q: What if I forget my password?
A: If you forget your password, you need to send us an email (support@catchalotto.co.uk) from the email address that you have registered with Catchalotto. We will respond to your email with a security question that you need to answer in order to reset your password. Your new password will be emailed to you and will be different to your old password. Due to our security policy all passwords stored in our database are encrypted and cannot be read by anyone.
Q: I have received an email saying I'm a winner and asking me for my account details and/or password. Is that normal?
A: Fraudsters sometimes send out e-mails to try to gain your personal information (be it your Catchalotto account or your bank account details) and may even ask you for money in return for a non-existent prize. Please be aware that although these fraudulent e-mails may have “Catchalotto” written on them, they are fake and you should never respond to an e-mail which asks for such information.
Catchalotto will never send you emails asking for your confidential or personal security information. If you receive such request, please do not take any further action and let us know immediately.
Also remember that any e-mails from Catchalotto will always address an email sent to you using your FIRST and LAST names. If you have doubts about an email or its origin, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Q: Do you guarantee that any of your syndicates will win the jackpot?
A: If we cover 13,983,816 different combinations within a syndicate for any particular main Lotto draw, then – YES, we are guaranteed to scoop the jackpot!
However, if we play fewer combinations then the answer is going to be – NO, we cannot guarantee that Catchalotto syndicates will scoop the jackpot, after all there is NO such a thing as ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY in the entire UNIVERSE. The odds of hitting the jackpot are tremendously improved the more combinations are covered. Don’t forget that there can be multiple winnings within a syndicate, hence you can actually have good level of winnings even if no jackpot is won.
There is no magic formula, no mathematical solution, no software applications that can generate the winning combination each and every time, but we believe that Catchalotto provides good foundation that can be built on to achieve the ultimate dream of every lottery player - winning big!
